Lightly biscuity with white peach notes, this is a highly promising sparkling wine from the Briscoes in Hertfordshire. As with the majority of the smaller English and Welsh wineries, Wareside Wines has no winery on site at the moment. So the Briscoes’ Pinot Noir joins with Chardonnay from Martin Oldaker in Surrenden in Kent, with Vince at Stanlake Park acting as midwife-winemaker.

There’s some nice light, brioche-type notes, testament to the wine’s two-year wait before release – would it that all English wineries were that patient.

Although this vintage has sold out – only 100 bottles were made – the 2009 was released before Christmas and is, according to David, even better. “Not as many bubbles but great flavour,” he says, proudly reporting that it’s been compared with Pol Roger.

With only 500 bottles of this one produced, we might need to get our skates on for this one too…
