Ripe for revival

Ripe for revival

For some of us, beer never went away. But for others, what many consider Britain’s national drink got overtaken by the fruits of the vine, aka wine.

So to witness the story of its recent phoenix-like revival, don’t miss this Tuesday’s Great British Food Revival programme, dedicated – yes – you guessed it – to beer.

I have to confess to an interest here: I helped the production team with their initial research, so I’m delighted to see our advocate for the day, chef Angela Hartnett, finding out for herself the fun and flavour that is good beer.

Catch up with Britain’s oldest brewery, Shepherd Neame. Tune in to hear School of Booze principal Jane Peyton give Angela a bit of a history lesson while they create a medieval ale, flavoured with honey and heather, rather than today’s hops.

Next Marverine Cole, aka Beer Beauty, assists with a bit of food matching before inviting Angela to a party for beer newbies – a group of city lasses.

And for those who can’t wait to see Angela’s chosen recipe, head here for a sneak preview of her tempting Chocolate & Stout Cake.

Cheers!
