Find your own way

Find your own way

To paraphrase the title of one of my favourite Fleetwood Mac songs, it’s wonderful to see English – and Welsh – still wine finding their own way in terms of food matches.

Once chefs have a chance to engage with the subtlety and delicacy of the whites and the elegant summer fruits of the rosés, it was only a matter of time.

And, with the trend towards lighter foods – British food isn’t all stodge and chips these days – wnes from these shores are becoming the partners of choice.

So this English Wine Week, whether its fizz with your fish and chips, an aromatic Bacchus with your asparagus, or a winsome rosé with your chicken, my Capital tips are below, I’ll follow with some Outside the Big Smoke suggestions, and check out the The True Taste of Wales ‘ summary of what’s on across the border.

Trinity comes up trumps

Top prize must go to Trinity Restaurant in Clapham for its marvellous English tasting menu. Cunningly running beyond Wine Week until 23 June, yes, this is serious money – £90 with wines – but look at the ambition. Seven courses, six wines, Skye’s Hush Heath Chardonnay from Kent is paired with Cornish Scallop, cucumber, kelp emulsion and cockles, while Bolney Estate’s Pinot Noir bubbly is paired with posh ham and eggs.

Meanwhile, across town, The Gilbert Scott restaurant in the iconic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel is offering a sparkling trio of tempting top class pairings, including Southwold fried whitebait with Nyetimber Classic to strawberries and Jersey cream with RidgeView’s Knightsbridge bubbly.

A week’s too short

Great to see several restaurants raising the English wine flag for more than just a week.

Friendly bistro Vivat Bacchus is offering three of my favourites – RidgeView’s Cavendish, Camel Valley Bacchus and Gusbourne’s Pinot Noir – by the glass throughout June at both its Farringdon and London Bridge restauraunts. With the best cheese cellar around – you can walk into it, I kid you not! – it’s the perfect opportunity to try some cheese and English wine pairings I feel.

Plus RidgeView is taking centre  stage for its 11 June Wine Club, and an English Wine Tour on 18 June, both at Farringdon, and there’s many reasons to drop by these convivial eateries.

Bumpkin Restaura nts will once again be offering half-a-dozen English wines by the glass from the likes of Gusbourne and Three Choirs during June, so ask for a taste and choose your favourite.

Or, if Asian cuisine is more your thing, take advantage of stylish Japanese restaurant Roka decision to waive corkage charges on English wine for the last day of Wine Week, Sunday 10 June.
