North Downs gains sparkling new player

Saturday sees the flinging open of field gates and winery doors as Hogs Back’s latest major drinks player, Greyfriars Vineyard, holds its first open day under new ownership.

Perhaps best known in drinks terms for its recently re-energised brewery, the Hogs Back near Guildford is also home to acres of south-facing chalk downland. Since taking over at Greyfriars Vineyard in 2010, Hilary and Mike Wagstaff have expanded the number of vines thirtyfold, taking the total to 45,000 over 30 acres.

With David Line as vineyard manager – a former rock musician and Plumpton College graduate, David had been with the winery’s previous owners – the plans are ambitious, with a new winery and tasting room on the cards.

Greyfriars bottlesJoin them as they celebrate the launch of their 2011 Sparkling Rosé Reserve on Saturday 14 September. Gates are open from 10am to 5pm, with tours and tasting available throughout the day.

This is your chance to see an emerging player in its early days.
