Westons English Sparkling Pear Wine 808

Westons 808 Pear WineSomething special and something new from the fifth generation of the Much Marcle dynasty of cidermakers, a bottle fermented pear wine, with a virtually neverending sparkle.

Gentle on the nose, this has been produced from a unique (as far as I know) blend of Blakeney perry pears and Conference dessert pears.

Light notes of caramel interweave the ripe pear flavours, with the underlying fizz giving the "pear wine" (as perries/ciders over 8.5% have to be called) a gentle lift.

Guy Lawrence, son of MD Helen Thomas (below left), has created this accomplished Guy Lawrence-Jonathan Blairpear wine with Weston's master cidermaker Jonathan Blair.

In the cider business for decades, Guy returned from a spell helping artisan producer Ballydooley Cidery in New Zealand to rejoin the family firm a few years ago. 808's original incarnation was for the wedding of one of Guy's sisters. Encouraged by the feedback, he experimented with the pear blend and worked with nearby Three Choirs Vineyard who look after the bottle fermentation, before coming up with this, its first commercial release.
