Isle of Arran 10 Year Old Port Wood

This is a very interesting whisky. It has a very clear cut porty note to it, red wine all the way through from the first sniff, to tasting and swallowing, to the finish.

And the port cask finishing has, as often happens, lent a suggestion of chocolate to the whisky.

But what is really interesting, really enjoyable, about this dram, is that there's something slightly grubby about it. Something earthy which is the very opposite of squeaky clean, correct, boring. Like the dash of bitters which balances a good martini, this earthy note turns a good malt into something rather memorable.

Not one to drink regularly, but rather to be shared with friends when you want a whisky to mull over and talk about.
