Caledonian Flying Scotsman Premium Bitter

Caledonian Flying ScotsmanWe're in traditional bitter territory with this offering from Caledonian – there’s not a flashy hop in sight. And that’s certainly not a slight. An assuringly traditional nose includes some roasted/toasted notes of nuts and coffee and caramel, all rounded together beautifully.

An appealing dark copper in colour, this ale has a clean finish and leaves you thinking of hazelnuts.

Within their 20-strong annual beer list, Caledonian like to include 12 monthly guests, and this brew is one of them, brewed to herald the work being done on the return of the Flying Scotsman – as it happens, the famous locomotive is being completely restored at The National Railway Museum in York. As a tribute and nod to the locomotive, this tipple offers, “First Class refreshment from Edinburgh to London and beyond”, according to operations manager at the Brewery, Craig Steven.

Steven suggests that this beer would be the perfect accompaniment to flavoursome meaty dishes such as roast pork, lamb and smoked sausage.

£14.99/8x500ml; 4%; available at Morrisons, Sainsburys in Scotland, and from the Caledonian Beer website
