Located within walking distance of the beautiful village of Coggeshall, just to the west of Colchester and within an hour of East London, you could be forgiven for thinking you are in the New World as you sit overlooking the vineyard in the blonde wood and open-windowed café.

Wander over to the wine wall and choose from any number of English wines while you enjoy a platter of local cheese or cold cuts for lunch. Venture out into the vineyard or sign up for a wine tasting course – Jane Mohan's delightful Wine Barn caters for all.

Jane and husband Stephen bought the vineyard back in 2009, moving their young family and selling their house to fund their new venture. More vines have been planted, talented winemaker Ulrich Hoffman is on board to create the wines, and the West Street Wine Barn has been born.

Environment meets heritage

And what a barn. Jane and Stephen commissioned Hanse Haus, the German energy-saving pre-fab specialists, to build an eco-friendly centre for them, with local architect Dayle Bayliss managing the ambitious project. Inspired by the nearby 13th century Grange Barn with its monastic links, it's no surprise to hear that the English Wine Barn is already shortlisted for an RICS East of England Design and Innovation award.

With a striking double-height entrance, complete with unique glass chandeliers, this contemporary open-plan space has a Vineyard Mezzanine with glorious views, an atmospheric Tasting Cellar as well as its café and terraces. The aim is not only to share their own wines with you, but to showcase the wines of East Anglia and those from further afield in England and Wales.

Families are well served by the children's playground and the café has a children's menu.

Opening daily to 5pm, the café is hoping to extend to evening dining in the summer – we'll keep you posted.

Locals join with Jane for the harvest, so let her know if you'd like to become part of her Vintage Crew.
