Sole Bay Brewery

Be prepared for an inspiring time when you visit Suffolk's major brewery in the enchanting coastal town of Southwold. In business since 1872, Adnams produces about a dozen beers plus some one-offs. Minimising environmental impact and contributing to the community is vital to the whole company. Most recent news is the opening in 2010 of the Copper House Distillery, where gin and vodka are being produced in small batches, to be joined eventually by whisky.

Visits start with a history of Southwold and the evolution of the Sole Bay Brewery before getting into the nitty gritty of brewing, the Adnams-way. Touring the energy-efficient brewery – recovering the heat and energy from each brew reduces the gas needed for brewing by a third – views from the mezzanine afford a chance to take in the scale of the operation. Groups finish in the brewhouse's official sampling room with generous measures of regulars and specials.

Eco-efficient initiatives

  • Adnams distribution centre – the "living" roof is made of a blanket of sedum plants to create natural insulation, walls are made from lime & locally grown hemp, solar panels heat water, & rainwater is "harvested" for vehicle washing & toilet flushing
  • Lightweight bottles – Adnams was the first to "go light" with its beer bottles
  • Biogas plant – a groundbreaking UK first, this uses brewery & local food waste to produce gas for use as a vehicle fuel and to inject into the national gas grid

Shop & Café

The full range of beers is available around the corner in the Cellar & Kitchen Shop, along with a wide selection of wines and kitchen bits'n'pieces. This is next to the friendly café.
