Located in a picturesque old dairy building belonging to the National Trust, Westerham brewery is presided over by owner and head brewer Robert Wicks, who established the operation in 2004.
Wicks is big on eco-credentials, and you’ll learn about all of them on a tour around the brewery. Westerham Brewery supports the organic hop garden at nearby Scotney Castle (also a lovely place to visit if you’re in the area) and can lay claim to launching one of the first Fairtrade beers on draught – William Wilberforce Freedom Ale.
The town of Westerham has rich brewing history, which the tour will also explore – Westerham Brewery has even managed to revive a freeze-dried yeast used by a long-closed brewery from the area, and start using it successfully!
Robert has also opened Beer Discoveries inside Westerham's own Wine Discoveries shop. Expect a fantastic array of beers from near and far, plus a couple of the Westerham Brews on tap for taste or off-sales.
- Scotney Pale Ale – Winner, National Trust Fine Farm Produce Award 2009 & 2010
- Scotney Best Bitter – Winner, National Trust Fine Farm Produce Award 2008 & 2010
- Viceroy IPA – Supreme Champion Beer, South-East SIBA 2011
- Local Food Hero - BBC Countryfile 2008
- Local spreading of effluent
- Use of ultra lightweight bottles, which are 33% lighter than standard
- The brewery, and all vehicles used, are powered with LPG, the cleanest fuel available
Monthly events take place at Westerham, during which visitors are welcomed into the brewery to enjoy the beers alongside food from local producers, while listening to talks on how the beer is produced and touring around the brewery. Check the Westerham website for details.
If you choose to get involved with the Westerham Brewery Beer Club you'll get information on tastings, events and product launches, up to 10 free event tickets (normally £8.50) and a 10% discount on all purchases direct from the brewery. You'll also get a souvenir pint glass!
