Set in the depths of rural East Lothian, within an hour of central Edinburgh, Glenkinchie distillery has been making a classic Lowland malt whisky for over 130 years.

Back then, there were around 100 Lowland distilleries, taking advantage of the high quality barley that the region produces, but these days there are just three, the other two being Auchentoshan and Bladnoch. Glenkinchie has two of the largest stills of any Scottish distiller, and they are an important factor in contributing to the light delicate taste of the malt.

The former malting floors of Glenkinchie have been converted into an exhibition space, the highlight of which is undoubtedly the model distillery. This was originally built for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924-5. In those days it seems that because it was a working model, the Customs and Excise would regularly check it to ensure that no unlicensed whisky was being produced!

The tour then proceeds through the distillery itself, where you can watch the mashing and brewing, and then on to the distilling hall, which is dominated by the large "lampglass" stills which make the characteristic Lowland style of whisky.
