Whisky Fringe 2011

5 August 2011 - 3:00pm - 7 August 2011 - 6:00pm

The tenth annual Whisky Fringe takes place in Edinburgh, from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 August.

This popular event takes place in the sumptuous surroundings of Mansfield Traquair, a beautiful converted church, and is always well attended by small distillers, independent bottlers, and the big firms alike.

Auchentoshan Three Wood

This malt is so-called because, after maturing in Bourbon casks, it spends time in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry barrels, a process which means the whisky brings something from all three kinds of wood.

Sometimes you'll taste spice and coconut from the Bourbon. Other times, the cigar box and chocolate of the PX will dominate. And nearly always, the dried fruit and nuts of the Oloroso casks is there, giving a rich, mellow, balanced, relaxing-in-your-favourite-armchair feel to your dram.

Auchentoshan 12 Year Old

Auchentoshan's standard malt is popular with casual whisky drinkers, because it's so approachable. Auchentoshan are the only Scottish producer to triple distill all their malts, and it gives a style which is always very smooth, although Auchentoshan is certainly richer than most Irish whiskies.

The theme of lightness and balance is evident on the nose, with gentle malty cereal notes – even grass – and a subtle tang of sweet sherry.

Innis & Gunn Original Oak Aged

Scottish brewing success story, Innis & Gunn, is releasing its Original on draught for the first time. Light amber in colour, the smell transports you to the kitchen: aromas of rich honey and caramel from the brew's time spent maturing in specially chosen oak barrels dominate.

Traquair House Brewery

Scotland's oldest, longest continuously inhabited house also produces some highly regarded ales, some to ancient recipes. No doubt the house would have had its own brewery in centuries gone by – with a guest list including Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie, it's hard to think otherwise – but it wasn't until the father of the current Lady of the Manor, Catherine Maxwell-Stuart, stumbled upon some old brewing kit in an outbuilding that the modern era began.

Auchentoshan

Within half an hour of both Glasgow City Centre and Loch Lomond, Auchentoshan is a popular spot to visit. Overlooking the River Clyde, Auchentoshan – meaning corner of the field – was set up in 1823 and is know for the delicacy and lightness of its malt. One secret to this elegance? Triple rather than double distillation.

A range of tours cater for both the newcomer and the connoisseur, and for the dedicated, there's a chance to fill your own bottle of Auchentoshan straight from the cask.

Belhaven Brewery

Be assured of a warm welcome at Belhaven. Within an hour of Edinburgh on the outskirts of historic Dunbar, sits Scotland's oldest continuously working brewery. With waters akin to those under Burton and ready access to barley, it is perhaps unsurprising that brewing extends back many centuries to canny monks resident in the area.
